Hi Mike, Regulations in Australia and ridiculus, totaltarian government anybody. I use www.shopbuy.com.au, which is an australian supplier but that goes through Asia, im pretty sure they will send you anything you want regardless, however becarful if its illegal in australia that would be your responsibility, its not like the people in the electronics factories in china are going to go waste their time checking every law in every country. Shopbuy even sells things like pepperspray....i know scary.

Hey Hey people,

its great to see an australian dropship directory.

My names kurt and i have been dropshipping for the last two years, mainly just through locating cheap gagets overseas, in my first year i would look at sites like chinavasion, however they turned out to be much more expensive then some of the other ones. I have had my ebay store up now for the entire years, which im very happy about. I now use you the australian site www.shopbuy.com.au, which i havnt had any trouble with, being australian and all. But this forum looks like a great place to mingle with other dropshippers (the people smart enough not to have to go to wor :). Look forward to meeting all of you

If you are operating your business from a home office you are entitled to claim expenses for items such as electricity, telephone calls, Internet access and maintenance etc.

The best way to ensure that you are getting all the deductions that you are entitled to is to employ the services of a reputable Certified Practicing Accountant.

If you try to claim these items when doing your own tax return you may be missing out on some of the expenses you could be claiming as a tax deduction. The cost of an accountant is also a deductible expense on future tax returns.

Welcome to the forum, and what Pete says is absolutely correct. It's not all about price and dealing in one of the most saturated niches on the internet (consumer electronics and accessories) on price alone I simply can't compete with some of the sellers in Hong Kong on eBay or the big Chinese gadget sites, but it's about offering things like better customer service, faster shipping times and a generally better experience that will also get you customers, and make sure those are repeat customers as well.

The ACCC are very serious about 'anti-competitive behaviour of wholesalers and suppliers and they do have teeth.

Unfortunately if you go to ta wholesaler looking for a deal for dropshipping it comes under a completely different set of rules because wholesale suppliers are not required to provide this service.

If you have a registered business and do want to buy wholesale to sell the products from your online business website (not eBay or other auction sites) you do have rights and if you feel you are being treated unfairly you should contact the ACCC and lodge a complaint. I have done it in the past and the results were satisfactory.

You can find more information about your rights at the following link:

Many shopowners are willing to discuss general business conditions and their industry in general with others who will take the time to listen. Knowing a few "keywords" and industry specific terms will help, but you can get quite a bit of information out of store owners if approached in the right way. Making it clear that you are not going to open around the corner also helps. Or become online competition. :)

As far as getting any specific sources, you won't do well, but there are ways.

There is my patented " dumpster diving sources determination method ". Here are a number of things you can do with any type of retail business you want to get some supplier information about.

1 - Pick up the goods on display and make a note of the manufacturers / importers / whatever name is on the package. You can often contact that company, tell them you are interested in opening a shop (do not say website) and would like to know a) if the sell direct to retailers or b) the names of some distributors you might contact.

Images on cell phones are good for gathering this info, but be discreet.

2 - Watch for delivery trucks to the business and note any names / phone numbers on the sides of the trucks. Contact those companies.

3 - Look for any "trade literature" (magazines, newspapers) that might be lying around. Many of these have "bingo cards" in them which allow you to order a subscription to the publication and / or circle numbers tied to specific ads in the publication so that the company placing the ad will mail you information on their products.

3A - This will also place you on additional mail lists. You will become a "store" to many companies, even if you don't own one. On the bingo card will be questions about your business, how many employees, how much $$ volume, what is your position, etc. Make up some answers. You have 5 employees, do $ 500,000 per year and you are the president, etc.

3B - These subscriptions are free. Once a year you'll get a card asking that you verify you are receiving the publication, as they charge their advertising fees depending on their 'audited" number of subscribers.

4 - Ask to use the restroom in the shop if it is in the back. Snoop around on your way to and from, noting names on shipping labels. Contact the shippers as above.

5 - Check out the dumpster. You will often find cartons with shipping labels attached. Contact those shippers as above.

6 - Chat up any employees. Many are there just for the paycheck and may be willing to share some trade secrets with you.

Finally, if you run into an owner who is totally hostile, wait until he is not there, then go back to the shop and say something like 'Has Sam (the owner) sold the shop yet? Last time I talked to him he said he was losing his arse and he was going to sell by the end of the month." That should create a few problems for him. :)

There are plenty of opportunities, still.

If price were the only factor one person would have all the business. I run a dropshipping business from China and compete against the big name Chinese sites every day. But, I give something they never heard of - Western type customer service.

I pay return shipping on Dead on Arrival goods, I respond to help desk tickets, email and PMs within minutes and hours, not two or three days later and I've built a million dollar business setting on my butt in my home.

My prices are competitive, but not always the cheapest. But I hold my own stock and ship the next day. Most of those big Chinese sites you see have no inventory of their own, they get the order and the money, then chase around town buying a piece here and a piece there, taking 2 or 3 days to send the order.

Just yesterday I had 2 orders for 50 each of two different tablets, plus a number of small dropship orders. Every piece is on the way at this moment. That's what gets me customers. The prices help, but it's the service and support that make the difference.

Mike, you mention things that ring a bell with me, old memories, expansion of what I've posted, etc.

You are so true about wholesalers being "forced" to sell to those they don't want to deal with. Examples:

Everything on the order is backordered

Defective goods are sent "by mistake"

Shipping errors turn deliveries into nightmares

Other such "games"

In my years in the auto parts business I was selling a large Chevrolet dealer fan belts, rather then them buy the "genuine" from GM. This went on a couple of years and no inducement could get the parts manager to change back to the GM belts. (Of course the fact we took the whole crew out every quarter to their favorite drinking spot had something to do with that decision.

Then, one day the parts manager gets called into the owner's office and told point blank to get rid of my belts and get GM in there. When he explained the better profits with mine the dealer said, "I don't care how many times you pick up a couple of dollars on a fan belt, the GM rep just told me if those belts weren't gone I could forget about getting any Corvettes."

So, there are ways.......

It is getting close as far as time to make arrangements. If you cannot get there you might also look at the exhibitor list and find someone to add your goods to their display.

http://www.sydneyhomeshow.com.au/exhibitors.php

You can also contact the show management and ask if they have any ideas or know of any reps who could handle this for you. Trade shows are on of the "good old boy" kinds of things, like conventions, school reunions, etc. Lots of old friends, hand shaking, back slapping, etc. so while not quite everyone knows everyone amongst the exhibitors, many go back years and may be of some help.

Even if you can't exhibit, you NEED to get there. Pass out business cards, meet some people, talk to others who are non-competitive who may offer some contacts and advice. Much of it is glad-handing and networking - the old fashioned way - face to face.

Get there!

The Sydney Homeshow could be a good place to find distributors and suppliers.

The exhibitors are usually open to new markets and new products. You could find something very unique for your online business or find a distributor for your product. The exhibition starts on the 31st May 2012 and runs for 4 days. It is an annual event.

http://www.sydneyhomeshow.com.au/

Of course if you cannot get to Sydney you will probably find a similar exhibition in your Capital city.

I think you would be very lucky to find anyone to supply you with the branded products mentioned. The industry is very protected in Australia and unless you have a retail outlet and are willing to purchase in bulk most wholesalers will not supply you.

Their answer when I have contacted these types wholesalers has always been 'We don't want to alienate our traditional retail sellers by supplying for dropshipping or online only businesses'.

There was a recent mention by the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) that wholesalers are not allowed to discriminate against 'online only businesses' by refusing to supply or fixing their wholesale prices higher but the wholesalers just find another way to refuse to supply.

I recently purchased a no-name SATNAV for my car and for the price it is far better than the previous 2 I have owned which were Sony and Garmin.

I'm sort of new to the area, but do have a couple of resellers in NZ who talk about selling on a local auction type site there.

There's always your own shopping cart site, but you''lhave to do some SEO work to get some traffic. 10 years ago I put up a new site and had sales before I was done, but that sort of stuff doesn't happen these days.

It takes some time and learning, but so does ebay and working them in conjunction can really pay dividends.

I do hosting for a couple of hundred shopping cart sites. I specialize in Hold Your Hand Service, giving newbies the info they need to grow into independent online shopkeepers. Unlike many, I don't try to tie you to me and suck this fee and that. I try to help you learn to do it yourself and charge less than $6 per month, paid monthly, $4.50 per month, paid annually. That's including a free shopping cart and installation.

A PayPal account, 6bucks a month or less and you're on your way....

Sorry, mate, can't help with those. All I deal with is unbranded goods from China. The delivery time is no problems, 3 days with DHL unless to remote areas.

But no name brands, which is what I thought you'd want. No name brands from China. :)

If you think you could move some no-name units I may be able to help.

I honestly don't know that market at all, though I did sell fleet tracking systems through the 1990's when they were a new product.
I can tell you that with both tablets and phones you can make more selling unbranded goods for as much as 1/4 or so of the name brands. Don't know if that would work for you, but you might give it try before just saying it will never work.

With Apple/Sony/Garmin/whoever, you're making more for them than for yourself. With unbranded goods you can have a better markup, for sure.

They are both completely legit, and are used by thousands of folks, even myself. The only concern would be that with especially WWB but also SaleHoo, is that they tend to have mainly US dropshippers and wholesalers, so that presuming your based in Australia yourself, you might find the number of Australian companies listed on there a little disappointing depending on your niche and personal requirements.

I'm a Yank, from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.

I am a strong believer in dropshipping, having been selling that way for a couple of decades. Dropshipping is a well established way of doing business in the US. I have sold dropshipped office supplies, forms, labels, computer checks and such since the early 1990's. At that time I was selling, installing and training in the use of Point-if-Sale computer systems to small businesses and even had many computer items dropshipped.

More recently, I've sold about $ 250,000 worth of gift & specialty items (about $ 90,000 cost) from a single US dropshipper (SMC). Sorry, they only ship to US and Canada. Most of this on my own shopping cart sites.

I've never sold the first thing on eBay, thank you.

I am a firm believer in dropshipping, but have found a very disturbing trend with many just going into being a dropshipping supplier. They want a premium for dropshipping. The folks I've dealt with over the years don't charge a penny extra for a dropship, opposed to me ordering for direct sales.

I've done both, I've had a kiosk in a large regional mall, sold in flea markets / car boots and also wholesaled quite a bit, both locally and on the net. But never have I been charged a different price for an item I ordered for my own stock and one I had dropshipped.

In December 2006 I had a lady who wanted to buy my retail business and asked if I'd include the websites, too. I threw them all in, including the trade name and suddenly stopped selling "real goods."

I now make my living online in two ways. I sell hosting, specializing in setting up shopping carts for those first entering the world of ecommerce.

I also do dropshipping myself. I started after being begged by a US citizen in China to partner with him to get a dropshipping operation started. He'd seen my posts on the subject on some forums and came looking for me. After deleting half a dozen or so emails from someone in China (that's all I needed to see and I'd run) he called me on the phone, convinced me he was legitimate and we started a website. The guy also sold pallets and containers of goods, and was gone most of the time. It was me training his employees remotely and did not last too long. But we had sold $10,000 worth of at the time new 4th gen MP4s in just one month, October 2009.

So, I've keep the site going and now have my own paid employees in China, a bank account there and a PayPal account there, as well. Seldom use the PayPal, it's too costly, but both buyers and myself wire money to the bank daily. Hard to imagine. If someone would have told me I would have my own business in China, sitting in the room over the garage in my home in Virginia and making a good living at it when I got out of high school in 1955, I'd have called them totally out of their mind.

Yeah, I'm 73 years old, been in business for myself most of those years, have signed as many as 30 paychecks a week and have virtually "been there - done that" when it comes to business. I've worked for several manufacturers for short periods as a sales rep - Firestone Tire, Monroe Auto Equipment Co, and Wurth. I've owned my own small regional chain of auto parts store and been a wholesaler / distributor for a number of companies.

So, I've had experience at virtually every level of the distribution chain. And I'm willing to share what I know. That's why I've come here and it's been why I've joined other forums over the years. In fact, while I may look for some business along the way, I'll butt heads with my own customers over general business issues. We stay friends and buyer/seller, but we'll also disagree on some point or another on the forum. Isn't that what they're all about, after all?

I'm looking forward to meeting more of you.

Both of those directories are legitimate. I know for a fact WWB stands 100% behind their 30 day guarantee. All it takes is an email saying you're not satisfied within the 30 day period and you'll have your money back in your PayPal account the next morning.

While I have specific info on Salehoo, I run into them everywhere and have never seen any complaints.

Trade shows. Trade publications. Trade associations.

As I Yank, I'm not familiar with AU specifics, but after 40 years or so of this I can tell you a bit about it.

Gifts shows, office supply/stationary shows, toy shows, maybe more. You need to set up tables there, the shop owners and buyers attend these shows and come ready to place orders. (I've ben a vendor at shows in Las Vegas and dealt with number of Aussies.)

Also, look around at shops. You'll often see something like "Australian Gift Dealer" or similar titles. Pick these up and you'll see a "New Products" section - send them a press release. You will also find ads inside, both display and classified at the back. In the US there is often what the call a "bingo card" where you can fill it in and send it to the magazine and they will add you to the mail list and if you circle any of the numbers on the card that correspond to an ad in he mag, they'll have the advertiser send you more literature.

You will also fine trade groups like "Australia Gift Retailers Association". Seek them out and join.

Finally, there will be Manufacturer's Agents (do a GOOGLE) who are sales reps who call on specific types of businesses, you'll surely find some who specialize in what you're offering. They will represent a number of products, but often have years of familiarity with the market and the buyers. In the US they usually work on a 15% commission, I can't guarantee that will be the case for you.

Size and weight of the items is of primary importance to give you a good answer. Also, as Mike mentioned, how quickly you want it delivered.

I ship to Australia mostly from China, where my inventory is, but do know I can send a small parcel up to 2kg from the US to OZ in a padded UPS type envelope/bag using the US Postal Service for $16.95 with about a week delivery time.

Frankly, the bigger problem will be finding dropshippers willing to export. The US is an insular place and most individuals and small companies are unfamiliar with either buying or selling abroad.

What you are basically asking for is what is called Order Fulfillment. An independent company holds your inventory and ships out as requested.

In this case, the inventory is yours, they are bonded and insured and hold your goods until you send an order for 1 piece to go here, one piece to go there. They can also insert any advertising propaganda you supply into your orders for you.

The cost is not cheap and you do have to pay for the inventory up front. You're not going to find any factories selling 1 piece at a time.

I have a business in Shenzhen, China and may be able to help if your source is there. We have not done this in the past, but I'd like to see more dropshipping in Australia and will do what I can to help out.

With so many scammers and even worse, middlemen or order gatherers, out there it is hard to find genuine dropshippers.

Several things that can make a difference it avoiding those with a "plan". They often charge a monthly fee simply to take your orders and pass them on to the actual dropshipper.

Not only do you pay a fee for this service, you pay a higher price for the goods. This not only reduces your profits, but also can reduce your sales because you have to raise your prices to where you are not competitive.

Getting feedback from others, getting info from some of the paid-for directories and simply browsing your hours away are how to find legitimate dropshippers who actually stock their own goods and sell to you at genuine wholesale prices.

Hello to everyone
My name is Mike and I one of the moderators of the Dropship Australia forum.

I am an active reseller of 'dropshipped' products and have been selling online since 2005.

Selling dropshipped products has allowed me to move from one place to another and still continue with my business. This is something that working 9-5 for someone else never allowed me to do. It has also lead into many other online ventures and given me the opportunity to learn new skills.

I do not sell on eBay but through my own sites and I found my dropship suppliers myself through hard work, many rejections and many discussions.

I hope you find this forum useful in your search for information and I also hope you take part in the discussions.

eBay just about has the market wrapped up when it comes to online auction sites that are open for public listing.

There is however an alternative to Auctions. Why not sell your items outright rather than at auctions.

Tripleclicks (http://www.mikeburgess.net/recommends/ecommerce) is in the top 400 eCommerce sites and has the advantage of being supported by over 100,000 affiliate marketers. This means when you add your products they are 'marketed' for you.

Listing your items is inexpensive and easy.

Why not give Tripleclicks (http://www.mikeburgess.net/recommends/ecommerce) a go and see how it turns out for you.

You could add some extra income by also becoming an SFI affiliate (http://www.mikeburgess.net/recommends/home-income) and promote the items listed on Tripleclicks as well as listing your own products.
